About Temple Terrace

Situated on the northeast corner of Tampa, Temple Terrace sits between three major interstates: I-4, I-75, and I-275. This location makes this community of approximately 27,000 people a great place to live if you need to commute - or if you simply want to get to another part of West Central Florida quickly - including Orlando and Gulf Coast beaches.

Named after the temple orange - a cross between a tangerine and an orange - Temple Terrace was considered Florida’s first golf course community. It was incorporated in 1925 and remains one of the few incorporated communities in Hillsborough County.

Temple Terrace’s history stretches back to before European explorers came to the United States. The Tocobaga Tribes were the region's original inhabitants before Spanish explorer Don Francisco Maria Celi located trees for shipbuilding in the area now known as Temple Terrace. It later became a game preserve, Riverhills, before being built as one of the first planned golf communities in the U.S.

There is lots to do in and around Temple Terrace. It is only minutes from Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. You can also visit the Florida Aquarium, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), or take in a sporting event or concert at Raymond James Stadium, Yuengling Center, or Amalie Arena. You can also take a short drive to the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Tampa International Airport is also close, allowing you to head out for a trip anywhere in the world.

Temple Terrace boasts over 300 acres of city land devoted to parks and recreation. This includes 3 athletic complexes, 2 community recreation centers, 3 district parks, 2 nature preserves, 5 swimming pools, 16 neighborhood parks, and 3 tennis facilities. Popular parks include Ben Lomond Park, the Billy Graham Garden/Preservation, Biltmore Park, Bonnie Brae Park, the Family Recreation Complex, Linwood Park, Omar K. Lightfoot Center, Pleasant Terrace Dog Run,  Ridgedale Sports Complex, Riverfront Preserve, Riverside Park Project, Rotary Park, Scout Park, Serena Park, Temple Terrace Hilltop Dog Park, University Square Playground, West River Preserve, Woodmont Park, and the Youth Sports Complex.

The Hillsborough River runs through Temple Terrace. This gives residents ample opportunity to explore the water on canoes, kayaks, power boats, and jet skis. It’s also well known for fishing opportunities and a great place to watch for alligators. Temple Terrace is also known for its trees, with many varieties of oak trees (grand oaks, laurel oaks, and water oaks), plus other types of trees such as crape myrtle, southern magnolia, redbud, sweetgum, sabal palm, slash pine, and bald cypress. In fact, Temple Terrace was named a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation.

Temple Terrace is located within the Hillsborough County School District. Public schools include Dr. Kiran C. Patel Elementary, Lewis Elementary, Riverhills Elementary, Riverhills Elementary, Greco Middle, Terrace Community Middle, King High, Patel High, and Tampa Bay Technical High School. There are many private and charter schools as well, including Focus Academy, Florida College Academy, Woodmont Charter, USF/Patel Partnership Elementary, MOSI Partnership Elementary, Corpus Christi Catholic School, Village of Excellence Academy, Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School, and Montessori Preparatory.

Temple Terrace has an emergency department - HCA Florida University Emergency Department - as well as a hospital, AdventHealth Tampa. It is also close to the major medical centers within Tampa proper. The Temple Terrace Public Library, part of the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library Cooperative, is also a popular resource in the community.
