Best Playgrounds in Tampa
In Florida, playgrounds aren't just a summertime activity. Our great weather means that you can go to a playground year-round. Many West Central Florida playgrounds even include amenities like splash pads so that you can cool off during the hotter days.
For parents, some features are must-haves when it comes to playgrounds. Shade is critical to protect yourself and your kids from the hot sun, as well as seating so you can watch your kids in comfort. But what about what kids want?
While every kid is different, most children want a playground with lots to do - from climbing to sliding to swinging. Playgrounds have evolved from when we were kids to be more interactive, accessible, and just plain cooler. We talked to some of the kids in our lives to come up with a list of some of the top playgrounds in Tampa.
Ballast Point Park
Ballast Point Park is well known for its super cool playground. The two-story structure even has a roller slide for little ones! Located right on Tampa Bay, there is also a 600-foot fishing pier, a boat ramp, a gazebo, picnic shelters, a fitness and wellness center, and a splash pad for kids. The Taste of Boston restaurant at the park offers food, drinks, and bait.
Carrollwood Village Park
The Carrollwood Village Park - located in Carrollwood - has it all. In addition to a splash pad and shaded playground, you will find an exercise trail, a fishing pier, pavilions, and a skate park. There is even a dog park so that your furry friends can come along to play! Other amenities include outdoor chess boards, ping pong tables, pavilions, outdoor fitness equipment, and a bike repair station.
Julian B Lane Riverfront Park
In downtown Tampa, Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park is a gem right on the Hillsborough River. The playground itself is covered, and there are tons of other things, too - like a splash pad, pickleball courts, basketball courts, and tennis courts. There is even a kayak launch and plenty of green space for running and playing.
Northdale Park
In Tampa, Northdale Park is perfect for kids of all ages. There is a shaded playground, plus basketball courts for older kids. It also has a field where kids can run, play tag, or even fly kites.
R.E. Olds Park
In Oldsmar, Pinellas County, you’ll find R.E. Olds Park - the first fully accessible playground in the county that was funded through the efforts of a 10-year-old girl. This playground has a dock, picnic area, trails, and open space. It also has a pirate-themed play structure.
Glencliff Park
In Westchase, Glencliff Park has something for everyone. There is a nice shaded playground with rotating climbers, swings, and a rope structure to climb. You can also find soccer fields, a basketball court, and a nature trail for older kids.
Al Lopez Park
A short walk from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Al Lopez Park has three distinct playgrounds, each with benches for parents and caregivers. This 132-acre park also has a nature trail and a fishing pond for kids and adults alike. You can also find the Cordelia B. Hunt Community Center and a dog park, pavilions, and exercise stations.
American Legion Park
In the Seminole Heights neighborhood of Tampa, the American Legion Park has it all. Not only is it shaded, but it has two play structures and swings. It also has ball fields, basketball courts, volleyball courts, a picnic area, and an activity center. Kids can also climb on an old-fashioned fire truck and make believe that they’re firefighters!
