Living in Palma Ceia
Palma Ceia is one of the most sought-after communities in the city of Tampa. Its street names are all Cuban, based on streets in Havana. Today, Palma Ceia is known for its brick-lined streets, bustling commercial district, and beautiful houses.
Population & Size
Palma Ceia is located southwest of downtown Tampa. It is situated along Hillsborough Bay, along a portion of Bayshore Boulevard - the second-longest continuous sidewalk in the United States. It borders many other high-end Tampa neighborhoods, including Bayshore Beautiful, Bayshore Gardens, and Hyde Park.
Palma Ceia is a relatively small neighborhood of just over 4,300 people living in 2,250 households. Most residents of Palma Ceia are between the ages of 25 and 64 years old,
It remains a diverse area, as it was when originally founded and populated by immigrants (largely from Cuba, Spain, and Italy).
History
Palma Ceia was established in 1903 when developer Thomas Palmer and his wife Ruby began to develop the area (which was originally known as Madrid). Later, when the Palmers submitted a subdivision plan, they renamed the area Palmera Spring after a natural spring in the region. The name was later changed to Palma Ceia for unknown reasons. Historians believe that the Cuban street names in the neighborhood came about after Angel Cuesta, president of Cuesta-Rey Cigars, shared a map of Havana with the Palmers.
The Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club was established in the neighborhood in 1916. It was Tampa’s first private golf club. The neighborhood grew and developed around the golf club, evolving to become the quaint neighborhood that so many love today.

Why Buy a Home in Palma Ceia?
Palma Ceia is not the ideal neighborhood for every house hunter. It is a pricier neighborhood, and it is located within Tampa proper. If you have a lower budget or don’t want to live in the city, then Palma Ceia may not be the right choice.
That being said, Palma Ceia is a well-established neighborhood where homes retain their value. While home prices have trended slightly downward as the housing market cools, the median sale price in Palma Ceia hovers around $1,000,000. Smaller houses and condos may be on the market for around $600,000, while there are many large and newer homes that sell for upwards of $3,000,000.
There are many large homes in Palma Ceia to accommodate larger households. Many neighborhoods in Tampa have much smaller houses, often with small lots. If you want space to grow and play, then Palma Ceia is an excellent choice.
Given the desirability of Palma Ceia, it is a great investment. There is a strong likelihood that a home you buy in Palma Ceia will grow in value. Houses in Palma Ceia tend to sell quickly, typically for at or near the asking price.
Palma Ceia offers a great blend of beautiful streets, interesting architecture, and fun things to do. It is also very walkable, with many shops, parks, and restaurants within an easy walk from the residential areas of the neighborhood.
Of course, Palma Ceia is also in the heart of Tampa. It is close to everything that West Central Florida has to offer, from white sand beaches to amusement parks to professional sports to museums. Living in Palma Ceia is like being in an oasis right in the heart of the city.
How Our Palma Ceia Realtors Can Help
If you have decided to buy a house in Palma Ceia, congratulations! It is a big step, but also an exciting one. We can help you with each step of the process to make it as smooth as possible.
We have decades of experience in real estate, including more than 20 years of experience in the Tampa area. We can help you with every aspect of purchasing a home, including making a wish list, exploring neighborhoods, and setting a budget.
Our Palma Ceia real estate agents use a three-step process to help our clients buy a home. Here is how it works:
- Pre-approval: even if you are looking in the upscale Palma Ceia neighborhood, you probably still have to stick to a budget. We suggest that our prospective homeowners start the process by getting pre-approved for a mortgage. This can be helpful when it comes to understanding how much you can realistically afford when buying a house. For some higher-end houses, pre-approval may also be necessary to schedule a showing. You can also use our mortgage calculator to estimate your monthly mortgage payment.
- Search: With a budget in mind, it is time to make a wish list. Deciding what you do and do not want in a house - such as a large yard or a dedicated playroom - is incredibly important. It will help us narrow down your home search and avoid wasting your time. When talking over your wants and needs, we will also get to know you better. We may even be able to suggest homes or neighborhoods that you might not have otherwise considered.
- Close: When you find the home that is right for you, we will work with you to put together an offer based on comparables. We can also assist you in negotiating a deal, including making counteroffers and deciding on contingencies. If your offer is accepted, we will walk you through the next steps (such as a home inspection and appraisal). We can then schedule a closing to transfer the legal title of your house to you.
