Beach Park is a highly sought-after neighborhood in South Tampa. It is bordered by Kennedy Boulevard to the north, Tampa Bay to the west, and Lois Avenue to the east. With a population of around 4,000 residents, Beach Park is known as one of the most desirable communities in Tampa.
Established in the early 1920s, Beach Park was originally named Beach Park on the Bay. The first person to purchase land in the neighborhood was Colonel Harry C. Culbreath, who bought land for $1.25 per acre after the Civil War. Culbreath planted a large orange grove over much of the tract of land that he purchased, the first to do so in the Interbay Peninsula. Tampa neighborhoods, Culbreath Isles and Culbreath Bayou, are named after him and were part of his original purchase.
By the 1920s, Developer T. Roy Young and his partners purchased additional land to develop the area into what we now know as the Beach Park neighborhood. The team didn’t have much success at first, given that the area was still fairly distant from the relatively small city of Tampa at that point. By the mid-1930s, the construction of Memorial Highway (part of Kennedy Boulevard), West Shore Boulevard, and a bridge across Tampa Bay led to greater development of the Interbay Peninsula. It quickly turned into a high-end neighborhood where executives, judges, and other notable figures in Tampa built houses.
Beach Park has many historic homes sprinkled throughout the neighborhood, including one home on Culbreath Avenue that was designed by a female architect, Susie Warlick (which was very unusual for the early 1900s). As you stroll through Beach Park, you’ll see Mediterranean Revival, Spanish Revival, and Italianate houses, along with post-World War II ranch houses.
It is a very walkable, dog-friendly neighborhood that is located just 17 minutes from downtown Tampa. What truly sets Beach Park apart from other Tampa neighborhoods is its character. Unlike newer developments, the neighborhood features:
