Are You Prepared to Weather the Storm?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st to the end of November. In Florida strong storms, from seasonal afternoon downpours to full-fledged hurricanes, are the norm. Whether you are new to the Tampa Bay area or a lifelong resident, following these tips will help you weather the storm and stay safe.

  • Have a Plan
The first, and the most important, thing you should do is make a plan. Check with local authorities to find the nearest evacuation routes and shelter locations. Make sure every member of your household knows what to do and where to go if a hurricane is on its way. Having a plan will help to alleviate anxiety and will ensure you aren't waiting in long lines at the last minute.
  • Gather Supplies
From food and water to medications and first aid supplies, make sure you build an emergency kit to see you through a few days. Including games and books will help occupy time until services are restored. A comprehensive Emergency PreparednessList can be found at Ready.gov
  • Secure Your Home
Walk the exterior of your home and identify debris that could become a dangerous projectile. Bring in patio furniture and toys, clean up downed branches, and store your trash cans. Check your gutters and downspouts to ensure they are clear of leaves to prevent clogs. Pre-installed shutters are a great investment to add to your home improvement list, but sheets of plywood will also work to protect your windows.
  • Don't Forget Fido
Make sure you take your pets into account. Some shelters do not accept pets and separate arrangements may have to be made. If you will be sheltering in your home make sure you plan food and water for your pet as well as yourself.
